Harold (Hal) Zarem

Hal Zarem, President & CEO

Hal Zarem is a technology executive with extensive experience at leading semiconductor, optical component and MEMS companies. He was president and CEO of Silicon Light Machines (SLM) from 2003 to 2010. During this period SLM developed the OvationONS™ optical sensor (now a business unit at Cypress Semiconductor) and commercialized Grating Light Valve technology for use in computer-to-plate printing and direct write lithography. In 2008 SLM was purchased by Dainippon Screen. He has also held executive positions at Cypress Semiconductor, JDS Uniphase, mCube and Ortel Corporation. Dr. Zarem earned a B.A. in physics from the University of California Berkeley, and M.S. and Ph.D. degrees in applied physics from the California Institute of Technology.

Hany Eitouni

Hany Eitouni, Vice President of Advanced Materials, Co-Founder

Dr. Eitouni was part of the team that developed the LBNL solid polymer electrolyte technology and has more than 10 years experience with polymer materials with specialized expertise in ionic transport through polymers. At Seeo, Dr. Eitouni has successfully led the effort to design, synthesize, and optimize Seeo’s proprietary electrolyte polymers with improved properties. Previously he was a staff scientist at Symyx Technologies where he established methods for determination of mechanical properties of low viscosity hot melt adhesives and developed high throughput instrumentation for materials discovery. He received a PhD from University of California, Berkeley and a BS from University of Texas, Austin, both in chemical engineering.

Ulrik Grape

Ulrik Grape, Vice President of Sales & Marketing

Ulrik Grape is an experienced international business development executive, who brings over 17 years of management experience in the lithium-ion industry.  From 2005 he was CEO of EnerDel, and from 2010 President of Ener1 Europe.  At EnerDel he was responsible for bringing in automotive customers such as Volvo Cars, Think, and AC Transit (Van Hool), as well as building up the team that commercialized the technology. Prior to this, Mr. Grape was Vice President of Sales & Marketing of Danionics, a lithium-ion polymer company based in Denmark, and won contracts from portable electronics customers such as Compaq (now HP), Apple and Sagem, which resulted in an IPO of the company on the Copenhagen Stock Exchange in early 2001.  In addition, Mr. Grape has worked in the computer peripheral, airline and construction equipment industries.  Mr. Grape has a B.S. degree in International Politics from Georgetown University and a MBA from INSEAD in France.

Hiroyuki Yumoto

Hiroyuki Yumoto, Vice President of Cell Development and Manufacturing

Hiroyuki Yumoto has more than 16 years of experience in the development of materials and cell design for lithium-ion and other battery chemistries. Most recently, Mr. Yumoto was Director of Cell Development at EnerDel and led all cell-level activity including R&D, product development and product engineering. Prior to this, Mr. Yumoto was Manager of Research & Development at Quallion. Mr. Yumoto started his career with Japan Storage Battery (JSB), one of the leading battery companies in Japan. He has extensive experience in developing materials for both primary and secondary lithium-ion batteries, including electrodes, electrolytes and separators. Mr. Yumoto has a BS in Industrial Chemistry and a MS in Polymer Chemistry from Kyoto University and a MS in Materials Science from the University of Southern California.

Michael Smith

Michael Smith, Director of Quality and Administration

Michael Smith has more than 30 years of experience in the automotive industry, working in Quality Assurance and Operations Management roles for Tier 1 automotive suppliers. He served as Director of Quality at EnerDel, where he led all Quality Assurance activity supporting the development and successful launches of automotive EV batteries and grid energy storage systems. Prior to that, he was Director of Operations for ELSA LLC, a manufacturer of fuel tanks, exhausts, and structural parts for various automakers. He also spent nearly 24 years with Alpine Electronics of America, where he managed Quality Assurance, Manufacturing, and multiple support departments. He is a certified ISO/TS 16949 Lead Auditor and has implemented multiple quality management systems leading to successful third-party registrations. Michael holds degrees in Management and Electronics Engineering Technology.
